Temperature chambers with mechanical refrigeration are normally self-contained and require no cooling gasses such as LN2 or CO2, but instead use mechanical refrigeration compressors to achieve cooling.

Mechanical Refrigeration Compressors need some form of cooling to prevent them from overheating.  There are two ways to accomplish this.  Air-cooled or water-cooled.  Most smaller temperature chambers (up to 32 cu/ft) utilize air-cooled compressors with a self-contained air-cooled condenser (similar to a car radiator with fan). Even though larger chambers (above 32 cu/ft) can also be configured this way, their compressors are normally remote air-cooled or water-cooled (since they use larger compressors and require more cooling capacity).

A temperature chamber with a remote air-cooled condenser normally requires the condenser be installed outside the building where the chamber will be used.  This requires special installation, a cost that should be considered when purchasing this type of temperature chamber.  Likewise, a water-cooled temperature chamber requires a water tower or chiller to supply water to the chamber, which is also an extra expense.
